Allergan targets contact lens solution at niche market

VK Chakravarti

Ahmedabad, June 7: Allergan India Ltd (AIL), a joint venture between US$ 1.3 billion Allergan Inc. and Nicholas Piramal India Ltd, in a countrywide launch on Monday unveiled `New Complete Comfort Plus' superior contact lens solution for a niche market.

According to AIL product manager Arnab Sarkar, the new product contains hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and tyloxapol for lubrication and comfort from environmental problems in a tropical country like India such as dust, smoke, exhaust and debris. He told The Financial Express that the new product was test launched in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad earlier this year and has already captured five per cent of the Rs 22-crore market. It was introduced in Europe early last year and has captured a market share of 35 per cent.

The California-based Allergan Inc is known globally for its eyecare, skincare and neuromuscular disorders through a strong presence in pharmaceutical, surgical and contact lens care products, backed by a very strong R&D base.

Sarkar said AIL has no immediate plans to set up a plant in India for contact lens solution which is imported currently, from its world class facilities in Hong Kong or Ireland. The same product is marketed in Europe and elsewhere.

The `New Complete' range consists of 360 ml and 180 ml packs, besides a 10 ml convenient sachet for lubricating lenses anytime, anywhere.

AIL director (Operations and IS) KT Rajan claimed that `Complete' is the world's fastest growing soft contact lens care brand. The `New Complete Comfort Plus' provided superior disinfection and protein removal enzyme, approved by FDA-US.
