Jagmohan moved to urban affairs in Cabinet reshuffle

Devsagar Singh
New Delhi, June 8: Prime Minister AB Vajpayee on Tuesday effected a minor reshuffle of his Cabinet by shifting two senior ministers on expected lines, ending intense speculation since yesterday.

While communications minister Jagmohan goes to ministry of urban affairs and employment, Ram Jethmalani has been moved to the ministry of law, justice and company Affairs. Parliamentary affairs minister PR Kumaramangalam's additional charge of the law and justice department has consequently been withdrawn.

President KR Narayanan signed the files on Tuesday and Rashtrapati Bhavan issued the necessary communique to this effect late this evening. As speculated, Vajpayee himself would be incharge of the communications ministry.

Reacting to the reshuffle, Jethmalani said: "I am happy that Jagmohan, who had earlier held the post of chairman, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is taking over (the urban development ministry). I hope that some of the steps taken by this ministry would be carried forward by mysuccessor."Jagmohan's reaction was not known till late this evening, although it is generally felt that he was most suitable for the urban development ministry.Jagmohan's shifting, according to sources, is linked to his tough stand he took on the realisation of licence fee from major telecom operators, a large number whom had defaulted.

While Jagmohan reportedly received full support from the finance ministry for his stand, the PMO buckled under the combined pressure of the telecom lobby.

It is another matter that Jagmohan is known for his success in Delhi's planned development in early phase of his career as vice-chairman of DDA. He subsequently added to his success as lt governor of Delhi and governor of Goa and Jammu and Kashmir.
