Gold matters
Gold in Mumbai fell to Rs 4,060/ten grams Monday from Rs 4,230 on May 31. The prognosis is that the price will decline further as more gold sales are proposed by the Bank of England. Should other central banks follow suit (as seems likely),it will become significantly easy.

Changed world plan
Curiously enough, the Kargil crisis could be the trigger for bringing about a sea-change in India's position in the world. For the first time in decades, the United States seems to be sympathetic towards the Indian point of view in Kashmir. Surprisingly, China too has refused to toe the Pakistani line -- at least in public. These positive developments have great potential.

Wakeup call to business from Kargil
There may or may not be a full-fledged war over Pakistan's Kargil invasion. But Indian business had better prepare for one. The Indian army is fighting a tough battle under adverse conditions, but businessmen have not yet woken up to their national responsibilities--at least, not at the organised level--in this war.
