Telco gears up to meet Indica delivery schedule

Abhinaba Das
Mumbai, June 15: Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company (Telco) is set to shift to a higher gear for meeting delivery targets of the Indica over the next quarter. The automobile major, which fell short of its delivery projections since the car's launch, is confident of delivering 60,000 cars by the fiscal-end.

"Deliveries have started picking up and will gain momentum in the coming months. We will soon be able to supply 6,500-7,000 cars a month," general manager Rajiv Dube said.

Telco delivered 2,365 Indicas last month, while another 3,000 vehicles are expected to be supplied in June. Against the targeted 10,000 by May-end, Indica supplies were, however, much lower at 6,200.

"We are definitely on course to deliver 60,000 Indicas in the current fiscal. There is no reason to believe that we will not meet our goal," Dube said.

The initial delays, Dube said, has been due to supply constraints which were not in line with projections. "The company has stood firm on the fact that there will not be anycompromise on quality in the quest for numbers. The initial teething problems are being ironed out and delivery will gain pace in the near future," Dube said.

On reports that the Consumer Guidance Society of India has sought explanation from the company for the delivery delays, Dube said he is yet to receive any communication in this regard.

Analysts, however, do not share Telco's optimism that delivery of Indica will match targets in the fiscal. "It seems unlikely that the company will deliver more than 35,000 cars by the fiscal-end," said an auto analyst.

Even Telco dealers say that going by the trends, the company can at best deliver 40,000 Indicas this fiscal.

Analysts point out that Telco's inability to meet the delivery schedule stems from the fact that its vendor base is not geared up to meet the targets. "As things stand, vendors are not in a position to supply the quantities that Telco needs and the delay is not due to any financial difficulties," said the auto analyst. Dube had, in a recentcommunique to dealers, stated that the company expects to roll out the first 10,000 cars by the June-July. "An elaborate customer support network of nearly 200 outlets is being strengthened with each passing day to bring service to your doorstep," the letter said.

The company is rolling out four variants of the Indica, one petrol and three diesel versions, with the petrol car priced at Rs 2.68 lakh ex-showroom in Mumbai. The car's basic diesel car has been priced at Rs 2.95 ex-showroom in the city. The semi-deluxe version is fetching a price of Rs 3.10 lakh, while the deluxe model is priced at Rs 4.06 lakh ex-showroom.
