Max message -- 25 per cent growth in pager users in March-April '99

K Baburajan
Bangalore, June 20: The message to cash in on the World Cup fever that swept the country was quite clear for Hutchison Max Telecom Ltd. Its ``Max Page World Cup 99 Tour'' campaign saw the number of Max pager subscribers zoom by 25 per cent during March-April 1999. The Max Page World Cup 99 Tour contest draw was conducted at the Max Page retail showroom on May 15, amidst much excitement and 11 lucky winners were selected for the World Cup finals at Lord's on June 20. The company spent Rs 15 lakh on the jamboree, in addition to huge funds (figures were not disclosed) spent on advertisements in the print medium and on hoardings.

Though company officials declined to comment on the brand visibility followed by the special World Cup campaign, it is learnt that the company is looking at more events in coming months to enhance the Max Pager brand recall. ``An industry, which was stumped by poor performance due to the advent of cellular ventures in the country, should cash in on such opportunities to make a quickbuck here and there,'' an industry analyst said.

To put a real spin on the event, Max Page selected former cricketer and legendary ace leg spinner BS Chandrashekhar to choose the 11 lucky winners for the all-expenses paid trip to the World Cup finals. Winners were selected from the seven cities of Bangalore, Pune, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara, all centres where Max Page offers services.

Max Page, associate vice-president (sales and customer operations), Sridhar Rao said the selection was made from amongst those who had bought pagers from Max Page during March and April 1999. ``The draw attracted over 5,500 entries and from all the seven cities where Max Page operates,'' he added.Max Page currently has an over 40 per cent marketshare in all the seven cities. ``International quality of customer service, total reliability, continuous innovation, value addition and total customer satisfaction were the major factors that helped reap the growth during the last few months,'' Raosaid.

The Bangalore-headquartered Max Page is the paging service division of Hutchison Max Telecom. According to the company, it was the first paging service licensee to begin operations in all its licensed cities simultaneously. Max Page was the first paging operator in the industry to provide both hardware and paging service to the customers.
