There was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted to be an actor. I was a bit of a troublesome child actually, and with my dad in a transferable job, I used to be left with my grandparents. Unfortunately (for them), I was too much to handle, so they put me in a military boarding school in Bangalore, hoping it would `sort me out'. That never worked either. But I made some great friends whom I am still in touch with, even today.Initially, I started off by modelling and then I began to get offers for films. With my first salary, I bought my mother a pearl necklace. I think I was a moderately successful actor. Some of my best known songs are popular even today. But I am not bitter about the fact that I am not-so-successful today. One must learn to accept the change. And I have some really good friends. When Basuda asked Rekha who she wanted as her co-star in Aastha, she immediately said ``only Ninny'' (that's her pet name for me). She said: ``I can be comfortable only with him.'' Of course, I told her that'snot such a compliment.
No, I have no businesses, nor have I diversified in other film-related areas. Do I think I am money savvy? As regards investing in real estate or shares, well, both are bad right now.
I'm not a spendthrift or a miser. I think I'm somewhere in between. But yes, I am strict on money matters with my family.
Do I like money? Who doesn't? I enjoy spending on holidays. In fact, the most wildly extravagant thing I ever did was my holiday to the US. Las Vegas is my favourite holiday spot. I wish someone would leave me a million dollars, I'd go around the world.
I think money is a necessity. But excess money is the root of all evil. I would ask for health, wealth and happiness for myself in the future. Today, what I enjoy most is having a free Sunday, getting my old school pals together, and having a beer session.
