Speaking after inaugurating a Rs 9-crore state-of-the-art studio of Pune Doordarshan centre here, Mahajan said the channel would be available only through cable network. He also stressed the need to have a `world channel' of DD for putting the Indian viewpoint before the world.

He said talks were on between the Russian television and DD for exchange of news.

Commenting on the quality of DD programmes, Mahajan said they were too dependent on cinema. "The basic function of television is to inform, educate and entertain. But undue importance is being given only to entertainment. There is also a overdose of religious programmes and serials which does not make any sense," Mahajan said and stressed the need for starting a separate channel only for education.
