Call of the state too irresistible for Advani
Jyotsna Bhatnagar
The infrastructure development blitzkreig had an impromptu guest of honour, Union home minister L K Advani. Apparently, on a brief stopover at Mumbai after a hectic schedule in Bangalore on Saturday, Advani saw an item on the programme in a local daily. The call of the state proved an irresistible attraction for the die-hard Gujarati who asked his programme planners to fit in an unscheduled stopover in Ahmedabad just to attend the function. "I am an `a-tithi'," quipped the home minister, tongue-in-cheek "because the literal meaning of the word is one who arrives without informing of the date," which had the executives and officious bankers in splits.Ostensibly the agenda of the home minister was to welcome the Union finance minister as a "representative of Gujarat" and seek the Centre's assistance in making Vision 2010 a success in every way so that "Gujarat emerges not as one of the most prosperous states of the country but as the most prosperous state." Not to be outdone by his politicalcomrade-in-arms, finance minister Yashwant Sinha said it was indeed a rare honour to be accorded a welcome by none less than the home minister himself.
