Pepper prices volatile

P Vinod Kumar
Kochi, June 27: Black pepper prices turned volatile during the week ended June 26 carrying over a trait from the previous week when prices had fluctuated violently. Although the opening and closing of the week's trading stood at Rs 19,200 per quintal for ready pepper, in between the prices were erratic defying any attempt to predict a trend next week.

On Monday the trading opened at Rs 19,200 per quintal, down from the previous week's closing of Rs 19,560 per quintal. On Tuesday, however, the prices went up to Rs 19,300 per quintal and on Wednesday it came down to Monday's level.

In general, the supply of fresh pepper has slightly improved with the rains relenting a little over the last week. Traders in Kochi said they expected the buoyancy to continue in the coming week too.
