Srinivas Cellcom first to accept revenue-sharing package

FE NEWS SERVICE
New Delhi, July 23: Cellular operator for Tamil Nadu Srinivas Cellcom on Friday became the first company to accept the bailout package to switchover from licence-fee regime to revenue-share system by signing the acceptance letter with the department of telecom (DoT).

Srinivas Cellcom despatched the acceptance letter on Friday to the DoT conveying its unconditional acceptance of the package, although the operators have been given a week's time to decide on the switchover, a company spokesman said.

The company, has welcomed the new package saying "it was the remarkable initiative by the Government to save the struggling telecom industry."

Srinivas Cellcom decided to accept the package without any prejudice as the concessions offered by the Government was more than sufficient for the industry to come out of the current mess, the spokesman said.

He said it became easy for the company to switchover since the company had no outstanding licence fee dues or liquidated damages to be worked out forpayment.

Operators have been given time till august 15 to clear these liquidated damages and 35 per cent of licence fee dues along with interest and set january 31 as deadline to clear the entire backlog of dues.

Srinivas Cellcom, which launched its cellular services in Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy recently, has so far garnered a subscrber-base of 10,000.
