Mulayam, Phoolan in SP's list of 94 for Lok Sabha

Rakesh Sood
New Delhi, Aug 19: Mulayam Singh Yadav's Smajwadi Party announced on Thursday nomination of the largest number woman candidates so far from a single state. The party has named 13 women candidates for UP parliamentary polls in its list of 94 announced on Thursday.

The party has named its nominees for 72 of UP's 85 Lok Sabha seats. Named in the list are member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, Phoolan Devi, noted film producer-director Muzaffer Ali, beside party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav himself. Yadav is seeking re-election from Sambhal.

Muzaffer Ali will try his luck from Nainital. Phoolan Devi will contest from Mirzapur in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The party has, however, not declared its candidates for 13 crucial seats including Lucknow and Amethi from where Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress President Sonia Gandhi are contesting respectively.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mulayam Singh Yadav said the party would soon decide on the pending seats in UP. "We are holding talks with the NationalistCongress Party (NCP) for electoral adjustment in UP and final decision will depend on the outcome of the deliberations," he said.

The party, having 20 members in the dissolved Lok Sabha, has dropped Jangbahadur Singh Patel from Phulpur and nominated Dharamraj Patel instead. It has also replaced sitting member Mitrasen Yadav with Hiralal Yadav in Faizabad.

The party announced that it would contest six seats in Madhya Pradesh including Guna from where Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia is contesting. MP Chanduria, a former member of Indian Administrative Service, has been given ticket to try his luck from Morena.

Yadav said the party will contest three of the seven seats in Delhi. These are, East Delhi, Delhi Sadar and Chandni Chowk.

The first list contained the names of candidates for nine seats in Rajasthan and one each in Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh. Yadav said his party had revised its decision to oppose Janata Dal (U)leader Sharad Yadav and would now support him.
