New Delhi, Aug 23: Maruti Udyog Ltd on Monday launched Zen Classic, a re-styled variant of its small car. Priced at Rs 3.64 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the variant is the latest entrant to the existing Zen range which comprises Zen LX (Rs 2.89 lakh), Zen VX (Rs 3.39 lakh), Zen AX (Rs 4.18 lakh) and Zen Diesel (Rs 4.18 lakh).Maruti managing director Jagdish Khattar said the introduction of a new variant is part of the company's brand extension strategy. "The idea is to offer customers the proven performance level of the Zen brand with better style," he said. Planning for the launch began one-and-a-half years back based on market and customer feedback, he added.
The launch of the new variant reflects Maruti's recognition of the sub-segments within the Zen market, Khattar said. The new variant will be targeted at discerning customers who are looking for individualised vehicles, said Maruti officials.
Styled on Cervo-C, the small car from the Suzuki stable, the new variant has a rounded head and tail lampswith chrome finish. Externally, the Zen Classic body's coloured bumpers have been given chrome finished panels. On the inside, the dashboard has been redesigned with wood finish louvers and stylish speedometer panel.
The company has had to import some upholstery to match the fabric, said officials. Plans are afoot to localise all parts in India, officials added.
The company would initially be targeting the car at the domestic market. Officials said that the company is open to the idea of exporting the car. However, for that to happen, the change in specifications has to be ratified by appropriate authorities in respective countries.
The company is also slated to roll out the multi-point fuel injection version of Zen in September this year, Maruti officials said.
Asked when all Maruti vehicles will meet the emission norms for being Euro-II compliant, Khattar said all the vehicles in the company's stable will be Euro-II compliant well before the scheduled deadline of April 1, 2000 as laid down by theSupreme Court.
