Berlin, Sept 1: The Rs 3,200 crore Videocon Group plans to sell close to two lakh units of colour televisions in the European market by the end of the year 2000. ``We would have sold close to US $ 20 million worth of consumer electronics in the European market by the end of next year,'' said Videocon International Ltd (VIL) president P N Dhoot. The company has already generated business worth US $ 5 lakh through the Videocon stall during the first two days of the on-going International Consumer Electronics Fair, IFA '99, being organised in Berlin. The company, which had embarked on a foray into the international market in the middle of last year, already has a presence in the Middle-East, where it claims to have a 2.5 per cent share of the CTV market. It has already appointed distributors for markets in the UK and Italy and plans to extend its distribution network to Poland, Bulgaria, Greece and Germany.
``We are also studying the possibility of reaching out to the retail consumer in the westernmarkets,'' said Dhoot. VIL is currently targeting OEMs in these markets.
``We will launch our products in the retail market in Europe sometime in 2001. Around this time we are planning to launch a range of top-end products,'' Dhoot said.
Where the low-to-medium pricing of the current range of products is expected to attract the bulk OEM purchaser, the range of technologically advanced products, including digital products and intelligent sets with integrated receivers are expected to do the trick in the retail markets, the company hopes.
Organised between August 28 and September 5 every year, the IFA is the largest trade show in the world for consumer electronics. The Videocon Group is the only national company from India which is displaying its complete range at the festival, where international heavyweights like Sony, Samsung, and Philips are participating alongwith hundreds of other companies from all over the world.
VIL has set up the stall at the fair with assistance from the Department ofTelecommunications (DoT). ``We have received inquiries for a wide range of products, including air conditioners and coolers. However, the 14 inch CTV model has by far been the most sought after amongst all our products,''said VIL vice president (International Operations) Satish P Molasi. He added that most of the inquiries have come from German buyers. The company has already bagged orders for close to 3,000 coolers and 2,400 air-conditioners.
