Delhi can clamp import curbs till end of 2000

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Sept 1: The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is expected to adopt, on September 22, its appellate body report recommending at least a 15-month timeframe for dismantling India's quantitative import restrictions against United States.

The WTO's appellate body had given its ruling on August 23 rejecting India's appeal on maintenance of quantitative restrictions. The appeal was against WTO's dispute settlement panel's ruling dismissing India's contention that it could maintain import curbs on balance of payment grounds.

Once the report is adopted, India and united states get 90 days time to start the implementation process after mutual consultation and arbitration if necessary.

First the two countries get 30 days for consultations to set the time frame for dismantling QR, which could be anything beyond December 2000.
