Congress levelling false charges -- BJP

Ravi Kapoor
New Delhi, Sept 1: BJP said on Wednesday that the Congress was desperate to find issues and was in its frustration levelling "patently false allegations" regarding Kargil.

Addressing a press gathering here on Wednesday, BJP general secretary KN Gobindacharya said, "Earlier, when India was fighting a military war and a diplomatic battle against Pakistan, the Congress kept on hurling charges that ran contrary to the national spirit."

After India won the war, and the entire world acknowledged India's splendid victory, the Congress described it as a defeat, Gobindacharya said, adding that at India's moment of pride, the Congress chose to sulk.

About the import of rice from Pakistan to India and its money being used by the Pakistan army, the BJP leader pointed out that it is as far-fetched as saying that Rs 50 crore given by Pt Nehru in 1947 to Pakistan-which are equivalent to Rs 2,00,000 crore today -- was used by the Pakistan army and the ISI all these years, Gobindacharya said.

The Congress hasrepeatedly tried to plant disinformation about the period of Pakistani incursion into Kargil, he alleged. Now, it is trying to "paint imaginary letters from a disgruntled officer as real ones."

The Congress first claimed that a brigadier had written to the army general and the Congress spokesman read out a file number. The army pointed out that not only does no such file exist, no brigadier writes to the general directly, Gobindacharya said. As a consequence, "the Congress kept quiet."

But "now the Congress has claimed that one such letter was sent by the brigadier on November 12, 1998." Though the defence ministry "has categorically denied the existence of any such letters," the Congress, "questioning the integrity of of the army top brass, has rejected the denial. As proof of delivery, it has produced a receipt dated June 28, 1999," Gobindacharya said.
