EC has `gender' problem in UP

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Lucknow, Sept 21: For BSP candidate from Nainital Naina Balsavar, it seems even her former Miss India title is not good enough to convince the Election Commission of her status as a woman.

Balsavar, wife of Akbar Ahmad `Dumpy', is a `male' in the election department's list of candidates from Uttar Pradesh.

In fact, the department has made a big goof-up in the gender classification to the embarrassment of many other candidates. The two female opponents of Union minister Maneka Gandhi (Philibit) have also been shown as `male'.Talat Aziz, the BSP candidate from Maharganj, also finds herself in the opposite sex.

The department has, however, not shown any gender discrimination. It has also made Nirmal Khatri, Congress candidate from Faizabad a `female'. Sex of some other candidates have also been shown wrongly.

"We really missed to show Ms Naina as a miss," chief electoral officer Noor Ahmad said admitting the lapses. The department is correcting the mistakes, the poll officer added.
