Abstract search

Bella Jaisinghani
A proud family woman is holding an exhibition of her paintings at Mumbai's Art Walk. Vipta Kapadia's show titled Journey Towards Truth will be on display at Oberoi Hotel's art gallery until September 19. The artist took a diploma in fine arts, drawing and painting from the Sir J J School of Arts, Mumbai, in 1978. She has held four exhibitions already.

Kapadia's preferred medium is oil on canvas, and style of work abstract. She says, "I work with brush, knife and roller. I did begin by doing landscapes and figurative work, but went on to the semi-realistic. I have now graduated to abstract art." Isn't there a risk that her work might not be understood the way she wants it to be? "You are free to interpret my work in your own way. And indeed, even for me, any painting is often a manifestation of that one moment of creativity which can never be duplicated. The feeling or thought, or even the colour scheme, may or may not come again," explains the artist.

She has been reading a lot about Bhagwan Mahavirrecently, and thoughts of Jainism pervade her recent works. She says, "I honestly do not think that I am merely Vipta, that is, the name I am known by in my present birth. I would like to experience the feeling of atma, of soul, and find out what other meaning my existence can have."

Ask her to name her inspiration and the first name that springs to Kapadia's lips is that of her husband Suresh Kapadia, who she says, has backed her every inch of the way.
