Dallas, Sept 24: General Motors Corp said on Friday that it will raise its investment in its Arlington, Texas truck assembly plant by an additional $75 million to more than $500 million.The total investment will expand the plant's capacity by 50percent and create more than 500 jobs. GM will build its next generation of full-size sport utility vehicles at the plant beginning in the second half of 2000.
The automaker announced in April that it would invest morethan $400 million in the plant, a move which assured the future of the old facility.
The plant will build the all-new Chevrolet Tahoe and GMCYukon, expected to reach dealerships early next year, and in the future the next generation Cadillac Escalade.
The additional investment will expand the body shop,enabling the plant to build a wide variety of full-size sport utility vehicle body configurations.
"Since 1996 GM has increased full-size truck productioncapacity by approximately 45 percent," said Gary White, GM vehicle line executive for full-size trucks. "The Arlington investment is part of GM's ongoing strategy to increase production of GM's popular full-size trucks and to build on our leadership in the full-size SUV market segment."
