Monsoons termed satisfactory this year, says IMD

New Delhi, Oct 3: The country has received normal rains of over 95 per cent of the long-term area weighted average of 899 mm in the current southwest monsoon season.

The area weighted average rainfall in the country till date has been over 852.80 mm.In the current monsoon season, northeast India received 103 per cent of the normal area weighted average rainfall of 1385.50 mm. The northwest India received 94 per cent of the normal area weighted average rainfall of 612.50 mm. The peninsular India received 80 per cent of the normal area weighted average rainfall of 870.40 mm.

During the entire monsoon period ie from June 1 to September 30, 28 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions covering 81 per cent area and 66 per cent meteorological districts received normal to excess rainfall. Only three meteorological subdivisions, namely, Andaman & Nicobar Islands; Saurashtra, Kutch & Diu and Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry. Four meteorological subdivisions, namely, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Rajasthan; Gujarat regionand Kerala received marginally deficient rainfall.

The revival of the monsoon activity in the first week of September helped many earlier rain deficient areas in the country to receive sufficient rains. The scheduled withdrawal of the monsoon on September 1 from the northwest end of the country was delayed by about two weeks.

Every meteorological subdivision of the country received rains during the season. Also no sub-diviions of the country received scanty rainfall. No rainfall is categoried as (-)100% no rains while scanty rainfall is categories rainfall being within the range of (-)60% to (-)99%.

All meteorological districts of the country received rainfall. There was scanty rainfall in only eight meteorological districts and deficient rainfall in 13 meteorological districts. There was excess rainfall in 67 meteorological districts and normal rainfall in 209 meteorological districts.

WEATHER FORECAST: Normal rainfall will continue in south peninsula and central Inda. Rainfall activity islikely to decrease in northern plains and northeastern states.

PREVIOUS WEEK'S REVIEW: Low pressure over Gangetic West Bengal lay over Orissa and adjoining areas on September 23. It moved northwestwards and lay over Bihar plateau and adjoining areas of Orissa and West Bengal on September 24 and persisted over the same area up to September 26 and weakened later on.

During the week ended September 29, southwest monsoon was vigorous in Gangetic West Bengal, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, central Maharashtra and north interior Karnataka and active in Orissa, Vidarbha, hills of west UP, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and south interior Karnataka.

Rainfall also occurred at most places in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, west MP and Marathawada and at many places in east MP, Konkan, Goa, Gujarat region, east Rajasthan and Lakshadweep. Rainfall occurred at a few places in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, plains of west UP, Jammu and Kashmir, Saurashtra and Kutch and atisolated places in the rest regions of the country.

During the week ended September 29, there was excess rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar plateau, Bihar plains, J&K, east Rajasthan, west MP, Gujarat region, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, central Maharashtra, Marathawada, Vidarbha, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and south interior Karnataka.

There was normal rains during the week in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, hills of west UP, Himachal Pradesh, west Rajasthan, east MP, Saurashtra, Kutch, Diu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, north interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep. But Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, east UP, plains of we4st UP, Punjab, Konkan and Goa received deficient rains and there was scanty rainfall during the week in Assam, Meghalaya, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, coastal Karnataka and Kerala.
