Madhepura, Oct 3: It was supposed to be the fight of titans, Laloo Yadav and Sharad Yadav in Madhepura, the heartland of Yadavs in Bihar. But, at the end of the day, it turned out to be a contest against Sharad Yadav and the state machinery. Rampant booth grabbing, rigging and blatant use of state machinery, amidst brisk polling, became the order of the day.Sharad Yadav, who is contesting against the Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Yadav, told The Financial Express after the polling "this election is a total farce and there was no election here at all. The deployment of forces showed a clear discrimination of the state machinery, which is helping the chief minister's husband." Though, 11 companies each of paramilitary forces and the Bihar Military Police were supposed to be deployed by the district administration at all the booths, the constituency was without any armed force. Mohan Singh of the paramilitary from the Punjab said "We have been waiting for the orders. We do not even have the vehicle andthe deputy superintendent of police here has no clue what to do with us."
Block president of RJD Kailash Prasad Gupta was shot dead in Ghasia segment of the constituency, where personal rivalry is reported to be the cause and is not connected with the polling process, said a polling official. This is the only death, which was reported from 12 constituencies, which went to polls on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Dalit voters, who account for a substantial 1.75 lakh votes, were actively participating in this election, unlike last year. Commenting on the polling scenario, Sharad Yadav said " there is a complete jungle raj here".
