Navi Mumbai markets witness mixed trading

Mumbai, Oct 5: Mixed trading marked the week ended on October 2. Turmeric, coriander, cummin, fennel and fenugreek witnessed mild reaction from recent highs. The high prices prompted buyers to ask for small quantities and this reduced volume of business transacted. Thus when business shrinks the stockists become sellers. This has been witnessed during last few months in the spices market, says a leading exporter, Rasik Mehta

Turmeric: Except Cuddapah, prices at Nizamabad, Duggirala and Sangli suffered a mild reaction of Rs 50 per quintal. Cuddapah reported revival of arrivals at enhanced prices. In Sangli, the spot varieties ruled at Rs 3,200 and pits changed hands between Rs 3,000 and Rs 3,200. In Mumbai, FOL prices per quintal was quoted at Rs 3,175-3,200 for Nizamabad, Rs 3,000-3,025 for Duggirala, Rs 3,100-3,150 for Cuddapah and Rs 3,400-3,450 for Sangli polished turmeric finger. Stray export deals were also booked.

Coriander: Prices reacted due to the recent surge and lost Rs 50 in Kanpur and Rs 100 in Indore varieties. Kanpur Avg machine cleaned ruled at Rs 1,525-1,675, Indore Avg machine cleaned ruled at Rs 1,400-1,425 and 5 per cent bold machine cleaned ruled at Rs 1,675-1,700. While 100 per cent Splits machine cleaned ruled at Rs 1,075-1,100 per quintal FOL Mumbai.

Cummin: Prices took a knock by Rs 25 per 20 kilograms on easier trend. One per cent machine cleaned for Singapore ruled at Rs 1,575-1,600, and Europe quality at Rs 1,675-1,700. The four per cent machine cleaned at Rs 1,500-1,525 per 20 kg FOL Mumbai.

Fennel: Easy trend pushed down the prices by Rs 25 per 20 kilogram lot. Dubai-Singapore quality were quoted at Rs 870-880, while London-Europe quality at Rs 950 to Rs 1,000 per 20 kg FOL Mumbai.

Fenugreek: Prices dipped by Rs 50 per quintal on fresh selling pressure. The one per cent best bold machine cleaned ruled at Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,250, medium best machine cleaned at Rs 2,050 to Rs 2,075 and average machine ruled cleaned at Rs 1,975 to Rs 2,000 per quintal FOL Mumbai.

Dill: Prices turned firm by Rs 100 per quintal on tight supplies. One per cent machine cleaned ruled at Rs 4,100-4,200 and 11 per cent FAQ at Rs 3,700-3,800.

Ajwan: Steady- and- firm conditions continued to prevail. Jamnagar ruled between Rs 7,000 and Rs 7,500. MP Superior at Rs 6,500-7,000 & medium at Rs 6,000-6,100 per quintal FOL Mumbai.

Chillies: Prices continued upward trend and rose by Rs 200 per quintal. Chilly with stem ruled at Rs 3,800-3,900 and chilly without stem at Rs 4,800- 5,000 per quintal FOL Mumbai.

Tamarind: Stagnant and listless conditions prevailed. Prices remained steady at reduced levels. Basket ruled at Rs 2,700-2,800, Slab at Rs 2,900-3,000, Consumer packs at Rs 3,100-3,300 per quintal FOL Mumbai.

Black pepper: Small bookings made Malabar relatively active. while prices continued to be steady. In Cochin, ready delivery ungarbled loose ruled at Rs 217 per kg. In the futures section, October contract ruled at Rs 228.40 per kilogram. MG1 FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 232 and FOL Mumbai at Rs 230 per kilogram.

Ginger: Prices eased. NUGC good FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 83,000 & FOL Mumbai at Rs 82,000 per metric tonne.

Sesameseeds: Hectic buying in natural sesameseeds by processers pushed up the prices. 98x2 cost Rs 2,950-3,000, 95x5 costs at Rs 2,900-2,925 & Hulled washed at Rs 3,900-3,950. Prices are unlikely to drop as Saurashtra has only 40 per cent crop. UP is expecting new crop by October.

Peanuts: Though production is low in Saurashtra, prices eased a bit in sympathy with prices of edible oil. 45-55 counts at Rs 2,600-2,650, 50-60 counts at Rs 2,500-2,550, 60-70 counts at Rs 2,400-2,450, 70-80 counts at Rs 2,350-2,400 and 80/90 counts at Rs 2,300-2,350.

Cardamom: Prices are almost steady and unchanged. AGEB ruled at Rs 580-600. AGB at Rs 530-550, AGS at Rs 480-500 and AGS 1 at Rs 450-460 per kilogram.
