Jamshedpur, Oct 5: The managing director of Tata Steel, Dr JJ Irani, and the former general manager (works), PN Roy, were sentenced to two years' simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each by the first class judicial magistrate, Brajesh Chandra Jha, in the court here on Monday.The two were convicted under Section 92 of the Factories Act for violating the provisions under Rule 55A of the Bihar Factories Rule, 1950. A case was filed by the then factory inspector, SB Jha, in 1991 in connection with the accidental death inside the factory of a Tisco worker, Sagar Sinku, on March 14, 1991.
Dr Irani and Roy, both were present in the court when the judgement was delivered.
The court also ordered additional six months' simple imprisonment to run concurrently in case of failure to pay the fine.
On an appeal, the court allowed the two to appeal against the verdict in a higher court against furnishing a bond of Rs 25,000.
Sources in the company's law office said that the company planned to move the court of east Singhbhum district judge against the ruling.
