Calcutta, Oct 10: The Budge Budge jetty of the Calcutta dock system is busy handling edible oil such as palmolein, refined breezed degummed (RBD) palmolein etc after a week-long strike by the mooring crew. As a result, several consignments of edible oil were stranded at the Sandheads during the striking period.According to Calcutta port sources, four consignments of edible oil containing 14,550 tonnes arrived at Budge Budge jetty during the period from October 1-7. Another three tankers carrying 8,643 tonnes of RBD palmolein and vegetable oil are likely to be offloaded by Sunday.
Besides, around 5,000 tonnes of RBD palmolein have been handled at Haldia dock during this period. The handling of sugar is continuing at Calcutta dock. According to CPT figures, two consignments of sugar totalling 14,519 tonnes arrived at Calcutta dock and another 8,000 tonnes of barge handling is in progress at Kulpi.
A consignment of wheat containing 25,917 tonnes from Bulgaria arrived at the Saugar anchorage, 50 kmupstream from the Sandheads. Sources say the wheat is to be offloaded by barges.
Throughput of crude at Haldia oil jetty declined to 1,36,000 tonnes from 1,77,000 tonnes in the previous week. Similarly, throughput of petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products declined to 63,220 tonnes compared to 66,844 tonnes in the previous week. As many as 53,000 tonnes of coking coal arrived at the Haldia dock against nil in the previous week. However, no vessel carrying thermal coal arrived from Tuticorin or Chennai to load. Container handling at the Calcutta Dock slightly increased to 1,740 TEUs compared to 1,580 TEUs in the previous week. Besides, a vessel arrived at the same venue for scrapping.
Among the other commodities handled by the Calcutta dock were 14,075 tonnes of sulphur and 3,845 tonnes of logs.
