Mumbai, Nov 5: Indian chemical manufacturers' Association (ICMA) today urged the union government to increase tariff on chemicals to bound levels and the reduction of traffic to be backloaded over a period of 20 years. In a memorandum submitted to secretary, department of chemicals and petrochemicals, ICMA president, S Subramanian strongly opposed the early harvest concept of developed world. He insisted on backloaded tariff reduction programme as in the case of textiles and in line with the percentage reductions done by the developed world earlier. The Centre should negotiate elongating the reduction schedule to at least 20 years, starting on 2003 with emphasis on backloading.
The other demands were: export benefits should be continued with transition period increased to 10 years, imposition of 5-6 per cent agricultural development tariff, 3-5 per cent environmental development tariff and 10 per cent social and infrastructural development tariff over and above the bound levels.
