Mumbai, Nov 26: India should negotiate for the removal of unilateral trade measures and meaningful transfer of technology at the coming Seattle meet, said Rallis India managing director Vijay RaiDelivering the key note address at a seminar on WTO and Intellectual property rights organised by Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), he said necessary flexibility must be given to developing countries to take care of their food security.
Restrictions of market access for the country's export of textiles and clothing have serious implications and jeopardises the very credibility of multi-fibre agreement (MFA), he added.
Unilateral actions like non-tariff restrictions including anti-dumping measures by developed countries on developing countries are contentious issues violating the spirit of the WTO and needs to be taken up for negotiations. Quantitative restrictions are needed for agricultural products as imports do not add value to the economy. But agricultural products constitute only a small portion of the world trade. India constantly opposed the inclusion TRIM's in multilateral trading framework as it impedes the process of industrialisation and adversely affects local industry, said Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) committee member Margi Patel.
Market access concessions for agricultural products would be negotiated in the usual manner, said Rakesh Singh, Professor at NMIMS.
