Brussels, Nov 28: Wenesday's European Union tender attracted 76 bids to export a total 153,750 tonnes of current series white sugar, EU member state officials said on Thursday. Officials confirmed that in the event the EU approved the export of 67,500 tonnes of white sugar at a maximum rebate of 52.825 euros per 100 kg. That brought the cumulative total for 1999/2000 to 1,445,810 tonnes so far. The panel delayed fixing monthly export refunds for inulin and other syrups and processed sugar goods known as non-annex 1 products, adding that a special committee was due to deal matter on Thursday afte noon. However, the committee did finalise a report to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) detailing EU sugar exports in the last year. The panel calculated that the EU granted export licences for 1.523 million tonnes of white sugar between October 1, 1998 and September 30, 1999 at a cost of 784 millioneuros in export subsidies, officials said. That meant the 15-nation bloc has kept within WTO limits. The EU wouldsend a preliminary notification of the figures to the WTO shortly and would return to the matter for last time before January end. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
