Mumbai, Dec 6: SGI India is scouting for partners to implement theme parks along the lines of Disneyland and Universal Studios in the country. These parks, enriched with high-end graphics, are ideal for education and entertainment for children who can learn through a virtual environment, said SGI India country manager Avinash Fotedar.SGI is planning to provide the technical expertise to companies who would invest, on an average, Rs 6 crore to set up such parks across the country. "A journey inside a coalmine which is on fire could be a unique experience. There will be many themes such as the flying carpet of Aladdin inside the park," he explained. Citing the success of Disneyland, he said that it would be a sound business proposal for companies in India.
The company is also expecting a major spurt in business following the sudden surge in demand from the entertainment and broadcasting industry. The company attributes the rise in demand to the successful coverage of general elections by NDTV on STAR Plus and Doordarshan on its National Network, using its high-end graphic equipment.
The company is expecting major business from Indian television channels such as Sony Entertainment Television, DD, Zee TV for equipment used in live coverage events such as cricket matches and online chat shows like election updates.
Fotedar claimed that the election coverage of some channels, with online graphics and highly-attractive presentations, was an eye-opener for many channels. "There have been big investments from TV channels for post-production equipment with DD being a major buyer. They are now looking at entertainment and edutainment areas rather seriously," he said.
The Hindi movie scene is also showing keen interest in using high-end graphics with more studios coming forward to take at look at SGI's repertoire. Indian companies such as Pentafour have picked up considerable business from Hollywood studios. Pentafour has been rated third best studio in the world for animated movies. Fotedar said that Pentafour had picked up as many as 120 workstations in recent months.
SGI workstations are generally preferred for entertainment studios but Fotedar said that he was not into a volume game. "We do not cater to the low-end graphic users. With an entry level prices of around Rs 2.5 lakh and a high end-machine of around Rs 3 crore, it is more often studios and companies like Pentafour pick up our systems," he said.
On the technological front, SGI uses the same components that go into any other computers. "We use the processors and the AGP 4X bus from Intel. All the other components are as much the same available today. But our machines are six times faster than any PC," Fotedar said. The difference between a normal PC and an SGI workstation can be glaring when it comes to 3-D animation where rendition takes a lot of memory and the right mixture of graphic cards and processor power.
SGI is expecting a revenue of around Rs 10 crore from the new orders and a growth of around 30-40 per cent.
