Yhogic lifestyle can not only check the spread of coronary artery diseases but also reverse these. It has also favourable effects on angina, body weight and lipid levels, says a study conducted by Dr S C Manchanda, head of the cardiology department with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Conducted over a period of one year, the study randomised 42 men with angiographically proven severe coronary obstructive diseases into two groups for control and yoga intervention. Patients in the control group were managed on conventional medical therapy. In the yoga group, the patients were advised strict lifestyle modification and yogic exercises. The changed lifestyle programme consisted of strict control of risk factors, moderate aerobic physical exercises, stress management and meditation, elaborates the study. The recommended diet was low in fat and high in carbohydrates and soluble fibres. It consisted of vegetable, fruit, oat barn, soyabeans, gram and other beans, carrots, fruit, nuts, onions and vegetables.
The patients along with their spouses were taught yoga in a special 4-day camp at the capital's Adhyatma Sadhna Kendra. The programme consisted of health rejuvenating exercises, relaxation exercises, breathing exercises, postures for stretch relaxation, Preksha meditation (Preksha means seeing deeply within), and reflection on moral values (Anuvrat and Anupreksha).
Coronary angiography repeated after one year showed that significantly more lesions regressed and, less lesions progressed in the yoga group. Also revascular procedures were much less frequent in the yoga group, concluded the study. Besides, the cost-effective intervention has no side effects, adds Dr Manchanda.
