Chennai, Jan 3: Commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland Ltd (ALL) will be unveiling its new product `Caravan' at the Auto Expo in New Delhi later this month. The vehicle designed by Dilip Chhabria and pegged as `a luxurious home away from home' will mark the company's maiden foray into the customised personal vehicle segment.Built on a `Cargo' platform, the vehicle has been designed to ideally suit holidaying or executive travel and comes fitted with television, digital video disc player, audio system and a personal computer. The vehicle comes complete with a bedroom, a bar, a toilet and a pantry with refrigerator and microwave oven.
The company would be showcasing six models in all at the expo. This includes `Rhino 4421', India's first indigenously built 44 tonne tractor trailer which will take on Volvo. Through Rhino, ALL hopes to offer a product at an affordable price with high power and productivity in the heavy vehicle category.
`Yak 4x4' is an improved version of Stallion 4x4s which was predominantly used in the Kargil war. Yak offers greater mobility across terrains, fatigue-free driving through automatic transmission and has a six-cylinder turbo charged engine that generates 10 per cent extra power ideally suited to the requirements of armed forces.
ALL will also be displaying the low floored `Sitibus 2000'. With a front floor height of 635, a rear engine and air suspensions both at front and rear. The company is hoping to peg this model as an excellent transportation solution in metros. Its earlier low-floored model `Panther' has found takers in many state transport undertakings. Other new variants are `Avion' - an upgraded version of tarmac coaches and SFC 1613, ALL's entry level model in the semi-forward segment.
These products are an outcome of ALL's conscious strategy of using customisation as a tool to improve its market share said the company spokesman. The company has brought out many new models based on studies conducted in various markets for identifying the requirements of the users.Meanwhile, ALL has tied up with Pragoti Industries Ltd, a Bangladesh government undertaking for assembling of Comet trucks there. The initial volume would be 250 trucks and the chassis would be exported to Bangladesh in CKD form. Bangladesh constitutes 20 per cent of ALL's exports to SAARC countries.
The company has also drawn up plans to launch virtual showrooms on its web site through which the customers would be able to view ALL's entire product range. Dealers would be able to place orders and track their orders through the web. Initially this facility will be available to overseas customers.
