The list consists of 70 such finance companies - included among them aremany which may not be in existence, while there are some such as ATNInternational, against whom the BSE has already initiated action.

"It has taken a long time for us to collate the list from RBI," executivedirector AN Joshi told The Financial Express. The list has been formed outof 500-odd companies which have so far been denied registration by the apexbanking authority. "This is only the first stage" Joshi said, adding thatthey would have to sift through the companies to see how many of them arestill in action, so to say, and then make a study on their price trends.

The exchange would also look into instances of violations of exchange rulesby any of the companies, before taking further action such as suspendingthem, if the need arose. The exchange's first responsibility was to informthe investing public about it and make them aware of such companies.

RBI sources said that while the companies have been barred from carrying onwith finance activities, they could still be doing other trading andmanufacturing activities. This is for the first time that BSE and RBI hasgot together to form a comprehensive list, they said. Included among thecompanies are those which were once names to be reckoned with - PrudentialCapital Markets (once a leading merchant banker), Kuber Auto General Finance& Leasing Ltd, Enarai Finance Ltd, Mangal Finance Ltd among others.

After the CRB Capital Markets episode came to light, RBI had asked allfinance companies in existence as on January 9, 1997 to apply forregistration with it by June end of the same year. Subsequently, RBI hasbeen scrutinising applications and issuing certificates of registration orrejecting and informing the public about the latter through announcements innewspapers.
