CALCUTTA, JANUARY 6: RPG Netcom, the cable television company servicing Calcutta, will not extend its operations beyond the area which it covers now following its tie-up with Satyam Infoway for internet services. At present, the company services an area of radius 32 kms covering the city and a few kilometres beyond.Speaking to The Financial Express, the chief executive officer of RPG Netcom, PK Basu, said "We are in a comfortable position with the current range and radius. We will not invite extra trouble by installing equipment across greater Calcutta. Instead, we will try to reach more households within the existing area."
RPG Netcom services almost 70 per cent of the city's cable viewers, according to RPG sources. However, it has already burnt its fingers trying to grab some share in areas dominated by Siticable, the other multi-system operator in Calcutta.
Cable operators say that talks are on between some independent cable operators to join the RPG umbrella. Basu, however, denied such possibilities."We have no such plan to enter into non-RPG areas. We are not aiming our Internet service at the non-RPG areas. We are happy with our subscribers and want to serve them well," Basu said.
Cable subscribers already receiving RPG's services would have to pay an extra sum every month to get the internet connection, Basu said. The rate, however, is yet to be finalised.
According to the plans, the subscribers will have to instal an add-on set-top box. It will have a key board or a joy stick as input device. "Initially the set-top box will be imported.
