Telco chassis dispatch crisis on

Arindam Sinha
Jamshedpur, Jan 7: The Jagdish Singh Dixe faction of the All India Convoy Workers' Union (AICWU) has been served a notice on Friday by the district administration here asking it to show cause why double booking should not be allowed and why the Telco Transport Companies' Association (TTCA) should not be allowed to transport chassis on its own when sufficient number of fresh convoy drivers were not available on a particular day. The group has been given 24 hours' time to reply to the notice.

Meanwhile, movement of Tata Engineering & Locomotive Co's truck chassis suffered for the third consecutive day on Friday, when only 47 chassis out of the 178 lined up for dispatch could move as only that many convoy drivers turned up.

"The government is losing on excise at Rs 60,000 a chassis as the flow of vehicles is getting stalled. Also, the convoy drivers are the ones who are losing," said Balwinder Singh, the leader of the other faction.

TTCA had entered into a wage agreement with this faction which sparked off the crisis a few days ago. Till Friday, the Telco management had been watching the situation from a distance. But now it has said that as the company was suffering because of the factional feud in AICWU, it would like to make a representation before the district administration if the problem was not resolved soon.

A Telco official told The Financial Express that the administration's banning of double booking was "an ill-informed step." "We have till now not intervened but we have our export commitments. Why should we as law-abiding citizens become a victim of the system? We will impress upon the administration about the impact it is having on us," he said.
