New Delhi, January 7: Daewoo Motors India Ltd (DMIL) is launching a special limited edition version of its popular 796cc small car Matiz - `Millennium Matiz' - and the CNG-powered version of its mid-size offering Cielo next week.To be unveiled at the forthcoming Auto Expo 2000, the company is planning to produce only 1,000 units of the small car, senior DMIL officials told UNI here on Friday.
The CNG Cielo would be under regular production, the officials said adding that the car would come in a bi-fuel option, running on both petrol and CNG.
Based on the response for this model, DMIL would decide on introducing a similar option on Nexia. The final price of these vehicles are yet to be decided, the officials added. Daewoo had recently stopped production of the GLE and GLX versions of `Cielo' and replaced them with Cielo Executive.
On the Millennium Matiz, the officials said, ``There would be improved upholstery in the car and a few cosmetic changes. It would be a better-value edition and would be specially designed for the new millennium.''
With this, Daewoo becomes the first company in India to introduce a special edition version on a small car. Introduction of limited edition versions have been a regular practice with car makers in the mid-size segment, particularly General Motors, Ford India and Honda Siel cars.
Both these cars would be unveiled as a major attraction at the Daewoo stall this year. The other products from its stables to be showcased at the fair include Nubira, Leganza and Cielo. Meanwhile, Daewoo has decided to curtail production and sale of buses in India and put off plans to introduce a range of commercial vehicles in the country.
The company has, instead, decided to concentrate on its small car Matiz, which has turned out to be a money-spinner for Daewoo, they added. Daewoo Motors India had in 1998 introduced two buses - Royale and Caravan, and announced plans to foray into the commercial vehicle (CV) segment with the launch of a six tonner truck by 1999-end.
