Woolmark to introduce solospun yarn

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Jan 6: The Woolmark Company (TWC) will soon introduce `solospun' yarn in India that will help fabric manufacturers get lighter-weight fabrics to beat the chilling cold. ``TWC is working actively on the introduction of solospun yarn in India,'' the company, known as the International Wool Secretariat, said in a statement.

The technology will provide lighterweight fabrics from coarser grade wool and reduce conversion cost by upto 55 per cent per kg compared to two-fold yarn. The company had already sold more than 1,050 spindles to leading players in the worsted wool industry in the country and trials were on in more than five companies.

The technology for solospun yarn had been first introduced in India in 1998, the company said adding that ``Indian manufacturers are cautious to invest in a new technology at this moment,'' as there is presently no established markets for this.

Once adopted, the solospun yarn would have wide usage as it would allow yarn manufacturers to extract fine, lightweight yarn from cheaper and coarser wool saving them costs while improving productivity. Meanwhile the TWC said that it was also going to support the wool industry in Vietnam and Thailand as part of its efforts to expand the global wool textile industry.

TWC director SK Chaudhari said that though there was not much scope for expanding the woolen textile industry in Vietnam, it offered a good export base.

Vietnam, which participated in the Asia-Pacific Textiles and Clothing Forum held recently in the Capital, asked Woolmark to provide technical assistance to the wool industry.

``If TWC can develop the Vietnamese knitwear, fabric and readymade garment industry, there is definitely a good scope of exporting Indian worsted yarn and fabrics to Vietnam," Chaudhari said.
