Let jobs chase people

RAJIV RAGHUNATH
In the hot pursuit of jobs, a large number of qualified professionals in the country settle for positions that don't match their individual aspirations and expertise. Headhunt specialist Anil Mahajan attributes this mismatch to lack of enough platforms where corporate organisations can meet the right candidates.

As executive director of Turnaround Management Consultants, a Delhi-based headhunting organisation, Mahajan had systematically documented the various problems that beset both employers and job-hunters across all sectors. With the Internet medium taking firms roots in the country, he decided to set up an interactive Website that would address all those problems that crop up in the conventional headhunting process. Www.headhuntindia.com is the outcome of this endeavour.

``My first objective was to ensure that jobs chase people, instead of people chasing jobs. To make this happen, we worked out an exhaustive, scientific method of classifying the professional and academic qualifications of eachapplicant. Further, this information is designed to reach an estimated 500 HR consultants located within and outside the country. By doing so, employers will be able to find just the right man for the right job,'' he explains.

The site also ensures that the applicant gets information about all the places to which his resume has been forwarded. This happens through e-mail.Mahajan has created an exhaustive list of professions under which applicants can post their resumes. ``But we are open to suggestions on expanding this list. Jobs descriptions are getting more innovative these days,'' he says. The job market is always governed by trends. E-commerce is surely one field that is offering a large number of jobs. To this happening world, Mahajan would like to add fields like ``production and maintenance engineering, product management, logistics and R&D in various fields''.

``Jobs are getting highly specialised. Therefore, individual profiles too need to be highly focussed. That is, if a company is looking fora person for its internal audit section, it wouldn't just settle for a finance professional. Rather, the applicants for the post would have to show their core competence in that specific area of operation,'' says Mahajan.

Www.headhuntindia.com will add value to this search operation, he adds. The site provides a separate mailbox to all the companies that advertise for positions. ``Here, they will automatically receive all the resumes that have been sorted by the server. The server itself is enabled to act intelligently. That is, if a job vacancy requires a specific number of years of experience, the server will consider all those resumes that have say plus, minus two years of relevant experience,'' he says. ``The server will not direct resumes of people to the very organisation where they are currently working. Of course, there is provision for an applicant to hide his name or place of work,'' says Mahajan.

``We have also introduced a chat-room wherein the headhunting organisation can interact with theapplicants. This on-line operation will facilitate the initial screening and short-listing of candidates,'' he adds.

`Content is the king. Utility is the vehicle. These are the governing principles of our work,'' he concludes.
