Onion prices likely to fall

January 19: The wholesale prices of onions in Mumbai is likely to come down drastically due to the port workers' strike. Around 2,000 tonnes of onions are exported to different parts of the eastern countries from the Mumbai port. If the strike continues, the onion supply will have to be brought to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi and re-distributed to the retail market.

This will result in an excess of onion, which can affect the fortunes of farmers in Nashik adversely, APMC spokesperson said. The wholesale prices have already come down to Rs 250-300 from Rs 300-400 per quintal kg before the strike, a trader said.
