Wheat cultivation
January 20: Recent rains in northern states have brightened the prospects of more area coming under wheat cultivation, which has already touched 202.19 lakh hectares compared to 198.99 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. The prevailing day and night temperature was quite suitable for wheat sowing, growth and development, according to the agriculture ministry.The wheat sowing is in full swing in northern states of Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab, a ministry release said. The area under rice crop has touched 15.79 lakh hectares by December end, 1999 as compared to 17.54 lakh hectares during the corresponding period of previous year.
