Call to raise duty on cotton
January 20: Farmer leaders from Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra have urged Prime Minister AB Vajpayee to raise the import duty on raw cotton from the existing levels. A delegation of Kisan Co-ordination Committee (KCC) representing farmers' organisations from three states, called on Vajpayee on Wednesday and informed him that cotton farmers were not getting renumerative price for their produce due to import of raw cotton that had created a price disparity in the market. The import duty on cotton should be enhanced to avoid further dampening of the cotton prices, they contended. The delegation also demanded the removal of restrictions on the imports of genetically improved seeds, particularly those of cotton variety, not being grown in the country. -- (Reuters & Agencies) Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
