What does Peter Mukherjea, CEO, STAR TV India, do when he's not striking deals? Quite simple, he plays cricket. Mukherjea is part of a long list of top-notch executives who participate in cricket tournaments to bring down the level of stress they experience at work. And one such tournament -- the Mahindra Realty Corporate Cricket 7s 2000 -- is currently underway in Mumbai. It began on January 22 at the Western Railway Cricket Ground, Mahalaxmi, and will continue till mid-March.Sanjiv Saran Mehra, who's conceived the event, says that the tournament is sponsored by Mahindra Realty, Club Mahindra Holidays and Pennzoil. Organised by Saran Presents and into its fourth year, the tournament has grown from just 23 teams in 1997 to 59 teams this year.
The rules of the game are quite unique though. Saran explains. First, he says, it's restricted to the management cadre executive. Second, it only allows amateur players to participate. Third, the matches are very short -- only seven overs per innings. Fourth, thereare restrictions on the bowlers' run-up and batsmen's score -- no bowler can bowl more than two overs and a batsman has to retire once he has scored 30 runs. Fifth, a team is made of 11 players, but only seven players play at any given point of time. And finally, the size of the field is smaller than the regular one with the boundaries being only 50 yards.
To make sure that executives of all age groups participate in the matches, the teams have been formed in a particular fashion. For instance, four players should be between 25 and 30 years of age, four players should be between 30 and 35 years and three players over 35 years of age.
Saran says that all the matches have been kept for the weekends, to suit the work schedules of the extremely busy participants. To give you an idea of the participants, these are some of the names: Ashish Rath, COO, ING Barings; Ajay Srinivasan, MD, Prudential-ICICI; Amit Gupta, head (corporate treasury sales), HSBC; Bala Swaminathan, director, KPMG; K R Bharat, MD, FirstBoston India Securities; Mihir Doshi, VC, Morgan Stanley Securities India; N Jaykumar, MD, Prime Securities; M Subramaniam, director, Barclays Bank; Peter Mukherjea, CEO, STAR TV India; R Ravimohan, MD, Crisil; Richard Wallace, director, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson; Uday Bhansali, partner, Andersen Consulting; and Vishnu Deuskar, MD, ABN Amro Securities. Participation in the tournament is by invitation only, says Saran.
Indicating that it is open to only the top corporates in various sectors. Elaborating on the objective of the game, Saran says that this one is meant for those who wish to play competitive cricket, but are too busy in their workplace to take up cricket seriously. So, watch out all you Tendulkars, Gangulys and Jadejas, there may be competition soon for you. From who else but the likes of Peter Mukherjea!
