Strict steps to stop wildlife trade
JANUARY 22: The World Wide Fund-India recently asked government agencies to take all possible measures to stop illegal trade in wildlife and their products and derivatives in the country. Last week's seizures of bones, skins and nails of wild animals in Uttar Pradesh is indicative of the extent of illegal trade in the country, a WWF-India release said. The organisation said more investigations and raids should be carried out at all known centres of the illegal trade besides strengthening the intelligence network and information gathering techniques. It said recent raids had resulted in the recovery of skins of four tigers, 70 leopards and 221 black bucks and 3,000 leopard nails. The spurt in illegal trade in wildlife and their products seriously jeopardise many endangered species and has been a matter of serious concern to conservation organisations, the release added.
