Transporters protest against entry tax
JANUARY 20: Transporters in New Delhi have decided to shut down their shutters from Friday in protest against the raids by the sales tax department and haven also decided to launch an agitation against the imposition of entry tax by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi which comes into effect from midnight. All India Motor Transport congress (AIMTC) President O P Agarwal said the entry tax on the entry of all commercial vehicles into the city was highly regressive and anti-people and added that the transporters would refuse to oblige. "if needed, we will stop our vehicles at the borders,'' he told a news conference. ``The transporters are already paying road tax and there is no logic behind the Path Kar.. Also it is not within the MCD's jurisdiction to impose this tax,'' explained Agarwal. He said the raids by the sales tax department on transporters' offices were not justified. ``The department has unleashed a reign of terror. It should book the sellers of the commodities for any malpractices. How can the transporters be held guilty?'' he asked. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
