Sun Pharma mulls bonus issue

Shishir Asthana
Mumbai, Jan 21: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, the speciality pharmaceutical major, is considering a bonus issue of shares. Its board of directors would meet on February 1 to consider the bonus issue. Reacting to the news, Sun Pharmaceutical's stock closed on Bombay Stock Exchange on Friday at the day's high of Rs 1,799 up from Thursday's close of Rs 1665. The stock attracted a volume of 16,550 shares.

Sun Pharmaceutical has been the market favourite among the pharmaceutical companies for the last one year. This is in spite of not having any products in the research pipeline. Growth through acquisition has been one of the main reasons for a strong performance by the company. During the third quarter of the current fiscal, the company posted a 24 per cent jump in turnover from Rs 90.43 crore to Rs 112.35 crore, while at the same time, bottomline increased by 48.6 per cent from Rs 15.40 crore to Rs 22.89 crore.

The results of the this year, however, cannot be compared with that of the previous year, due toacquisition of Natco's brands and products from erstwhile Milmet.

The company has a strong presence in key therapeutic segments like neurology, psychiatry, cardiology and diabetology (which contribute over 50 per cent of its turnover). Sun Pharmaceutical is ranked first in neurology and psychiatry, while in cardiology it stands third and in the newly launched orthopaedic division, the company stands fifth in the market. Sun Pharmaceutical currently has an equity base of Rs 15.42 crore and a reserve of Rs 250.75 crore. Among other things, the company is currently considering setting up a research centre at Chennai which will entirely focus on projects for new drug discovery and new delivery systems.
