Catch 'em young -- Caltiger-Pepsi plan strategy to penetrate schools

Kohinoor Mandal
Calcutta, Jan 20: City-based Internet service provider Caltiger.com, ownedby Patriot Automation Projects, has entered into a marketing tie-up with thecola major Pepsi in a bid to reach out to schools children.

Caltiger's chief executive officer Chris Rebello said that initially, theproject was to cover schools in Calcutta alone, but in future, it willspread out to other parts of the country too.

"We are mostly Calcutta-oriented but we will spread out to other cities.According to our plans, after Calcutta we will move to Bombay, Bangalore,Guwahati, Siliguri, Jamshedpur and then to Delhi-all along with Pepsi," shesaid.

At present, Caltiger and Pepsi are approaching the Calcutta schools togetherwith a strategic offer. "As per the plan, there will be an Internetconnection provided by Caltiger and also a Pepsi vending machine. The schoolwill not be allowed to sell Coke on their premises. In turn, the personalcomputers of the school will be cross-subsidised," Rebello clarified.

She also said that the proposal was floated by Caltiger and it was soonaccepted by the cola major. "We are the only Internet service provider withsome character. We are being identified as a young and dynamic company. Thisidentity factor is missing among other service providers. So therelationship with Pepsi is natural," the chief executive added.

The two brands would also promote this venture jointly. "Both of us have bigad-budgets. So it makes sense to advertise jointly. There will beco-branding of the service and the drink," Rebello added.

At present, out of a total of 8,000 Caltiger subscribers, about 5,000 areschool children. The company has targeted to move to 100 cities and sign onone lakh subscribers by the end of this year. "The portion of school kids inour subscriber base will increase further once we get the Pepsi arrangementgoing," she added.

Caltiger has also decided to rename itself as Freetiger.com, once it movesto other cities. The company has received all the necessary clearances fromthe respective authorities.

Rebello added: "We want to associate ourselves with any sort ofcommunity-oriented audience. Schools are the best for this, and since we areyoung we could easily match the image of Pepsi."

Caltiger has also made arrangements with 15 to 20 companies for retailing."To start with, we have entered into a relationship with Kentucky FriedChicken. We will source the KFC products from their Bangalore unit anddeliver them in the city. This business would start from the middle of nextmonth," Rebello said.

About two years ago when KFC approached the West Bengal government foropening up a unit in the state, the Left Front government turned it down.Similarly, Caltiger has also entered into retailing tie-ups with Pepe Jeans,Titan watches, Mattle Toys and Herbal Life, a weight maintenance programme.
