CHENNAI, FEBRUARY 21: Online tracking of containers in transit from the southern region will now be possible, thanks to the IT initiative of the Container Corporation of India (Concor). As a part of its logistics management strategy, the corporation has decided to provide details on the position and location of its containers in transit at its Web site.Though an online container tracking system is already prevalent on the Mumbai and Delhi route, the corporation is planning to extend the facility for the southern region through the domestic Web page created recently at www.concorindia.com. This service is likely to be in place by April 2001.The objective of offering such a facility is to provide pro-active information to the customers through another easier mode in addition to the existing customer facilitation cell operating at the regional office in Chennai, say sources.
The corporation will be able to provide through the Web page latest train summaries, updates on the location of trains and also information on the containers detached en route.Users will just have to log in the container number and details pertaining to the container such as the train number, destination number of containers sent, location, placement time and date (time at which the container reaches the terminal) will be listed. Not just this, the corporation is also working out strategies to provide such details through the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) also. Even though the plan is yet to be finalised, efforts will be taken up to bring in the system in the southern region during the next financial year, assured the source.
It is estimated that the corporation will be able to handle a minimum of 150 to 200 calls per day once the system is in place.
To attend to the growing needs of its customers, Concor is also planning to decentralise the customer facilitation cell (CFC) at the regional office in Chennai. Each terminal of Concor in the southern region will be provided with a CFC to reply to the queries of its customers and by March 2000 it is proposed that the Tondiarpet terminal in Chennai and the Whitefield terminal in Bangalore will be CFC compatible. All the other terminals in southern region - Cochin, Madurai, Tuticorin, Coimbatore will also be added to the list over a period of time.
