Q-Flex Cables set for ERP launch

Joseph Vackayil
CHENNAI, FEBRUARY 21: From electrical cable manufacturing and marketing to enterprise resource planning (ERP) is not a systematic growth trajectory. But the logic of this diversification for Q-Flex Cables Ltd lies in a small-scale unit's quest for modernisation and computerisation and the difficulty in obtaining a cost effective package. "When I went shopping for an effective ERP package I found the prices beyond the reach of any small scale unit. Even then the net result and return from such huge investment were uncertain. This necessity was the mother of the invention and perfection of an ERP package for small and medium enterprises by Q-Flex", according to its chairman and managing director PA Joykutty. Ready for the formal launch, this ERP is going to be a core area of operation and it will be reflected in the new name the company plans to assume: Q-Flex Cables and Software Limited.

Joykutty said Q-Flex ERP package would have features suitable for every segment. It is prepared with focus on India and Indian companies. "I know the real problems, needs and solutions as I have built up Q-Flex in the hardest way. This 20 years of experience is the basis of our ERP project. Moreover it is prepared with an Indian entrepreneur in mind and not the overseas customer'', he told The Financial Express.

George P Joy, director, information systems, said besides the corporate experience, the fact that the company was well-connected with the supply chain of both the inputs and the finished product has helped in making unique features in the Q-Flex ERP. This is besides the conventional modules for human resource, materials and inventory management, finance and accounting.

It can be very industry-specific. Stand-alone packages also would be supplied for those who do not want invest substantial amount. ``This adaptability is going to be our unique selling point'', he added.

Q-Flex Cables manufactures a wide range of cables, for various applications such as power cords, power cables, control cables and cables for automotive wiring harness and building cables. The company had close to Rs 9-crore sales in last year. It hopes for 30 per cent jump this year and to touch Rs 30 crore by 2002. ERP packages are expected to be a substantial contributor.
