NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 21: LG Electronics India Ltd (LGEIL) has set a target to export $125 million worth of consumer electronics items by 2005 to South and Southeast Asia, West Asia and Belgium. To achieve the long-term target in a phased manner, the company has also come out with a short-term vision of exporting items worth $10 million by this year end and $40 million by 2002-end.
The company has already exported $3 million worth electronic goods in 1999.``Our company wants to make India an export hub for these countries,'' LGEIL vice-president (marketing and sales) Ajay Kapila said here.
Last year, Sri Lanka was the main destination of LG's exports. Around $1 million of items were exported to that market. The other destinations included Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia and The Maldives.
While colour televisions captured 40 per cent of exports, airconditioners contributed to 35 per cent and semi-automatic washing machines (SAWM) 25 per cent. Completely-built units of all these products were exported.
As per plans for 2002, LGEIL is expecting to earn 40 per cent of exports earnings from CTVs, 25 per cent each from SAWM and ACs and 10 per cent from others.
While ACs, primarily of split variety, will be exported mainly to Belgium, CTVs and SAWMs will be sold to neighbouring countries and Southeast Asia. CTVs will also be exported to West Asian countries, for where Dubai will be the principal distribution centre.
The parent company LG Electronics of Korea has devised a strategy for its subsidiaries in the region to concentrate on their niche areas for overseas markets to avoid overlapping. While Chinese subsidiary will focus on automatic washing machines, colour picture tubes, audio products, personal computer monitors and video products, LGEIL will concentrate on CTVs, SAWMs, ACs, refrigerators and microwave owens. The Indonesian subsidiary will export mainly direct cool refrigerators and low-end CTVs.
Besides, Indian specific products like CTVs with in-built cricket game are also being exported to countries like Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, LGEIL has earned Rs 130 crore of turnover in January this year, up 147 per cent during the same month the previous year. The company has set a target to record Rs 1,500 crore of turnover this calender year.
