MUMBAI, MARCH 3: The Central Institute of Fisheries Education in the city isorganising a two-day National Conference on Fisheries Biotechnology herefrom March 4. The institute being run under the aegis of the Indian Councilof Agricultural Research, New Delhi, will be inaugurated by Union ministerof state for agriculture Hukum Dev Narayan Yadav, said WS Lakra, head offish genetics and biotechnology division.The conference, the first such to be held in the country, will deliberate onways to enhance fish production in the country to 15 million tonnes by theyear 2030. Lakra stated that it was economical to develop fast-growingvarieties of fish that have a high resistance to disease and high foodconversion ratio through application of advances in the field ofbiotechnology.
Green and white revolutions were possible in the country due tobiotechnology and genetics and now it was the turn of blue revolution whichwas all ready to take off, Lakra said.
Lakra said that in this regard recombinant DNA technology holds very highhopes as in the fields of agriculture and animal sciences. He hoped that thedeliberations would provide new directions to scientists in the fisheriessector.
