Fresh twist to shopping online -- Dip into your eWallet?

Neeraj Saxena
NEW DELHI, MARCH 6: The Internet user-identity dot.com eCode has introduced another unique service last week: a wireless electronic wallet which can be accessed by WAP-enabled cell phones, personal digital assistants and two-way pagers, making e-shopping and e-news access much easier.

Earlier, the company had ushered in a unique system where registered users can choose a unique, permanent online user ID as their eCode to which all their contact information is attached. Members thus update the information as needed and the address books of their contacts always stays up-to-date.

The new site, called www.WAP.ecode.com, is up for the purpose and Chandra has tied up with New York-based RTS Wireless-a leading provider of software and network systems used to connect the internet, corporate intranets and other networks to any type of local or wide area wireless voice or data network.

RTS, which has several wireless service provider companies as customers, will incorporate the eWallet technology into its Advantage WAP Gateway Internet infrastructure software. eCode president and CEO Chandra is seeking similar tie-ups with cellular and pager service providers in India.

``Users of wireless service can take advantage of the eWallet in the same way that PC-based Internet users do by selecting a unique, a permanent identifier like an eCode and add personal contact information, including credit card information, to their private and secure profile,'' says Chandra.

When using cellphones connected to the Internet through an Advantage WAP Gateway to shop online, users simply have to enter their eCode and password and press a key on the phone to instruct the eWallet to conveniently and securely provide the online merchant with their most up-to-date credit card and shipping/biling information. Users can thus avoid the tedious and complex process of entering the credit card and shipping/billing information from the cellphone's keypad. Also, sensitive personal and financial information is never transferred `over the air' and is therefore secured with the same technology that online Web shopping has alwaysemployed.

In addition, eCode.com will soon offer its registered members a full suite of identity management tools without charging for it. Its unique iBar browser, which Chandra terms as a portable portal for simplified Web navigation, includes a self-updating address book, calender, bookmarks and an electronic key chain with all the logins and passwords needed to access password-protected sites.

Chandra says he is working on making iBar available on the WAP-enabled cellphones and Palmtops soon. However, he refuses to divulge his revenue-model as also the number of registered users for eCode so far.

``All I can say is that on iBar, we will have an icon which can be sponsored by various companies for branding themselves just like Netscape does on its browser. This space can also be sold to companies buying a full version of iBar,'' he says adding that iBar eliminates the frustration of having one's Web tools in disparate locations.
