Limit of sorbic acid in preservatives raised

New Delhi, March 6: The government has proposed to increase the limit of sorbic acid as a preservative in processed cheese, restrict the presence of residues of veterinary drugs in food, and amend the standards of "atta", "maida", and "suji" from clean wheat free of rodent hair. A gazette notification was issued on February 11, inviting suggestions and objections from the public regarding these porposals, as per an official release. It said the government proposes to increase the existing permitted limit of sorbic acid as preservative in cheese or processed cheese from 1000 parts per million (ppm) to 3000 ppm to bring it at par with international standards.The government has noted that there have been reports in some parts of the country about the presence of veterinary drugs in milk. With a view to avoiding the misuse of veterinary drugs, government proposes to regulate the maximum permitted limit for certain approved veterinary drug residues and presence of antibiotics in milk in consonance with the levels prescribed by the WHO ans Codex Alimentarius Commission of FAO.
