Calcutta, March 10: General Motors India Ltd (GMIL) has entered the refurbishing business under the brand name OK 5-star, where cars of all makes are refurbished with its own models getting a preference over the others. A car exchange programme for Opel Astra 2000 is also being planned which is to kick off shortly.GMIL president and managing director Richard C Swando told reporters here on Friday, "we are getting into the refurbishment business step by step."In line with the feedback the company received from the 30-odd dealers, the company has set up two units at Indore and Hyderabad for refurbishing cars. The foray into this segment is mainly to support customers and dealers.
Another segment the company is looking at is auto component exports. Swando said that the company was exporting suspension spings, wiring, cooling system components to Europe and to South American countries. GMIL is also exporting cars to countries such as Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motor Corp has planned a unique roadshow for both its recently launched models - 1389cc Opel Corsa and 1598cc Opel Astra . In all probability the roadshow will be on a mobile caravan, that is, showroom on wheels, and will be the first such roadshow in India.
The caravan will visit 50 cities during the next six months.
